Voices Across Borders: Stories of Nepali Identity, Resistance, and Reclaimed Narratives (KONTEKST & CVA Autumn 2025 Public Programme)

Film screening & conversation with Anusha Thulung Rai, Sabhyata Garbuja Pun, Aditya Pokharel and Sapana Sanjeevani


Opening our autumn seminar series, two Nepali collectives meet across borders: the London-based Rodhi Ghar Collective (Anusha Thulung Rai and Sabhyata Pun) and Kathmandu’s Sadak, Satta ra Sidhhanta Collective (Aditya Pokharel and Sapana Sanjeevani). In response to Nepal’s recent political unrest, we will screen two short films highlighting Nepali voices resisting marginalisation, followed by an open discussion with the filmmakers on visual media as a tool for Indigenous and Adiwasi activism today.

EVENT SCHEDULE:

17:50 — doors open

18:00-18:20 — Introduction to the socio-political situation in Nepal and some context behind the films

18:30-19:30 — film screenings:

  1. Lest We Forget: Chameli Devi Das by Aditya Pokharel and Sapana Sanjeevani – The film was made as part of ‘Sadak, Satta, Sidhhanta (SSS)’ – an initiative to document women in politics and nation building in Nepal. It documents the ongoing political work and historical role of Chameli Devi Das, a Nepali female politician from Dalit community, and records how marginalized communities pursue representation and justice.

  2. 27 Ghanta: Echoes of a Nation by Anusha Thulung Rai The film will focus on how both Nepali youths in Nepal and diaspora are both present in political life. Content warning: depictions of gun violence, police brutality, and protest-related violence.

19:30-20:00 — conversation with the filmmakers about the process of making their films, linking their work to the current political context.

ACCESSIBILITY FAQ:

1. WHO IS THIS FOR: The events are open to everyone, not just students. You will not require a uni ID to enter.

2. TICKETS: No tickets. The events are FREE, just show up.

3. WHERE: The event series will take place at the Media Research Building (MRB) at the back end of the Goldsmiths University campus (see this map for directions). Look out for our guiding signs. If you still have issues with finding us, simply message us via Instagram (@kontekst.collective) on the day and one of us will come pick you up from the main uni entrance.

4. GETTING THERE: Tube: the closest tube stations are: New Cross / New Cross Gate (Windrush line overground) or Deptford Bridge (DLR). Bus: the closest bus stop is Marquis of Granby. Cyclists: there are plenty of bike racks at Goldsmiths campus.

5. WHEELCHAIR ACCESS: The space is wheelchair accessible. Please message us beforehand if you would like any assistance on the day.

6. SIGN LANGUAGE: Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, we are currently unable to hire a sign language interpretor.

7. WELFARE: An assigned welfare officer will be in the room during the sessions in case you need support.
