From the Docks to Diaspora: Uncovering the Hidden Histories of South Asian Seafarers

Join us for a dynamic two-day workshop that brings to light the overlooked histories of South Asian seafarers whose lives shaped — and were shaped by — the British Empire. From the ports of colonial South Asia to the streets of contemporary East London, we trace their erased legacies through stories, sounds, and space.

Bridging scholarship, art, and community memory, this event gathers academics and artists for an immersive exploration of empire, migration, and identity.

Highlights include:

  • (Day 1) Panel Conversations: Engage with scholars and artists who are redefining how we remember the maritime histories of empire and migration.

  • (Day 2) Interactive Walking Tour: Experience East London through a curated soundscape and oral history trail that reanimates the voices and footsteps of the seafaring South Asian communities.

  • Archival Encounters: Explore materials, images, and testimonies that bring this underrepresented history to life.

  • Shared Snacks: The workshop includes shared snacks and coffee— an opportunity to continue the conversation over some food, free of charge.

Whether you're a researcher, artist, student, or local resident, this workshop offers an inclusive space to learn, reflect, and connect across generations and geographies.
