Do We Belong

film screening — conversation — fundraiser

While en route to deliver aid to Gaza in June 2025, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition ship 'Madleen’ received a distress signal from a sinking boat in the Mediterranean carrying people fleeing violence in Sudan and elsewhere.

The world watched the search and rescue, which foregrounds the fatal intersections between the genocide in Gaza, war in Sudan, and the EU and UK’s border policies that have turned the Mediterranean and the Channel into a graveyard.

In a reflective evening of solidarity, we explored these intersecting struggles and what we can do in solidarity. Proceeds from the event were donated to mutual aid projects: Water Is Life (Gaza), Thamra (Gaza), Khartoum Aid Kitchen (Sudan), and Free Ibrahima Bah (UK/Senegal).

PROGRAMME:

‘Madleen’ Reels

by Freedom Flotilla Coalition
2025

The ‘Madleen’—a ship of 12 volunteers sailing to break the siege of Gaza—received a mayday call in the Mediterranean. We witness the search-and-rescue mission in real time.

Vittne (Witness)

by Ahmad Al Shehabi
2024

In this poetic archival journey, a Palestinian family revisits their escape from war in Syria to Europe, reflecting on what it means to leave home and what awaited on the other side.

Dover 82

by Aria Danaparamita
2025

In 2024, 82 people lost their lives crossing the English Channel to seek safety in the UK. This evocative visual essay on Dover contemplates on how borders shape our relationship to place.

CONVERSATION

As the evening continued, we heard from community members organising across these struggles and reflected on what resistance and solidarity mean for us.

Alarmphone UK

Alarmphone is a network operating a hotline for boats in distress, currently covering the Mediterranean, the Aegean Sea, and the English Channel. We learned about the EU and Libya’s deadly “pull-back” tactics—as seen in the Madleen search-and-rescue footage.

Madaniya

Our friend Ahmad, a member of the Madaniya collective, shared his personal story and reflection on the war in Sudan, his family’s displacement and his journey to the UK, how to support other Sudanese refugees, and the importance of community.

All African Women’s Group

From a self-organised group of women seeking asylum in the UK, our sister Sylvia from AAWG shared the women’s campaigns across issues affecting them—from advocating to reunite families across borders, to resisting Israel’s genocide in Gaza through daily and weekly protests.

Free Ibrahima Bah Campaign

Ibrahima is a Senegalese young man who came to the UK to seek asylum as a teenager, when the boat he was steering collapsed in the Channel. He was convicted of manslaughter over the deaths. The campaign seeks justice for Ibrahima and everyone criminalised by the UK’s immigration policies.

Southwark and Lambeth Anti-Raids

Part of London’s anti-raids network, a comrade from SL Anti-Raids shared how local community resistance and movement building is essential to stop immigration raids, resist the UK’s racist border violence, and protect our friends and neighbours.

Culture Workers Against Genocide

Culture Workers Against Genocide is a group organising UK artists, audiences, and institutions in support of justice for the Palestinian people. From the campaign to boycott Sadler’s Wells theatre to the occupation of the Barbican, Elina discussed creative channels of resistance.

Filton 18

We were joined by friends and family of the Filton 18, a group of actionists held as political prisoners in the UK for their actions against Elbit Systems, an Israeli military manufacturer. With the same Israeli quadcopters being used to murder Palestinians, harass the Madleen crew, and surveil refugees seeking safety, we spoke about how these issues are interlinked, and why every action counts.
