Bio:
Beatriz is an artist and researcher from Portugal. They studied Film and TV at London College of Communication - University of the Arts London, and later went on to get a MSc in Visual, Material and Museum Anthropology at Oxford University.

Beatriz is currently thinking about how we can use art to (re)connect with the environment and encourage systems of degrowth while bringing value to local communities. With this in mind, they funded
Farpa: an arts centre in the periphery of Porto. Their published work has revolved around rivers and water mythologies. At the moment, they are writing a queer poetry zine and developing a short-film about the rural forest fires in Portugal.

Beatriz is a member of the TRACTS Network supported by COST Action. They learnt about KONTEKST during one of TRACTS’ multimodal schools through Lee Douglas, the Lecturer & Convenor of the MA in Visual Anthropology at Goldsmiths.

A Complicated Portrait of the Portuguese River Paiva (2025)

photo essay · 5k words · Portugal · English

An experimental photo-essay that presents a complicated portrait of the river Paiva in northern Portugal, treating it as an ethnographic subject through an amphibious anthropology that surrenders to the materiality of the underwater analogue photography process. This techno-animistic approach teases out invisibilities and shifts our perceptions of agency in image-making, revealing the dynamic relationships between water, camera, and person.

This is a TRAJECTORIA publication based upon work developed during COST Action CA20134 (2023).
